hang on dont u think the point is to make people want to use public transport?? the more it costs to drive the more people will want to use trains, buses etc etc. but i stil think tubes and buses shud be cheaper, i spend like £20 a week on them!!!! grrrr.

Why should people be forced to use public transport though? And oif they want people using public transport, would it not be better to make public transport BETTER so that people CHOOSE to use it instead of FORCING them to?

Road pricing will make cars the preserve of the rich.

totally aggree!!! costs too much, always late etc etc but its still better for envrnment to use public transport. i heard the other day that apprtly the worlds fuel will run out IN OUR LIFETIME (well mine anyways, but i am 19 so maybe not evryone elses) but FREAKY.
so yea transport systems totally need to be better and CHEAPER to encourage people to use it!!!!
but how?? i will have to become prime minister. who will vote for me??

Don't you think it would be better to encourage people to buy cars that give out less emissions or electric cars? Road pricing discourages this.. By charging people by how far they travel rather than the amount of fuel they use there is going to be no incentive to switch to more environmentally friendly cars - someone driving a great big "gas guzzling" 4x4 will be charged exactly the same as someone driving a smart car (or in future, an electric car).

As it is currently, you pay for petrol - the more petrol you use the more you pay for, so cars that use more petrol and therefore cause more pollution cost more to run.

Also, road pricing will mean that people use roads that are cheaper rather than main roads that get you somewhere quicker - longer journeys = more pollution

Road pricing is nothing to do with reducing pollution, it's just a way for the goverment to claim that they have reduced congestion without spending a single penny on the already under-funded road system while at the same time continuing to making huge profits.

yes but they are fricking expensive too!! and even if the price comes down you still get those jerks who love watching top gear and driving fast cars etc, who think electric cars are for girls blouses and who will keep driving their hummers and feraris.
but yep the road pricing is not fair for people driving envormntally friendly cars if they have to pay the same per mile!!! stupid idea i say.

If there is high demand for them then the price will drop - think how much DVD players were a few years ago - now you can get one for £15

If there is an incentive to develop cheap electric cars then it will happen - BUT road pricing would remove the incentive completely.

Theres nothing to say that electric cars won't be fast, much the opposite - it's happening already http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/08/the_hybrid_mini.php
