The bloke on the back of the new £20, Adam Smith, is considered the 'Father of classical economics'.
He was one of the pioneers of the theory that a nation of people, all out for themselves, can actually collectively benefit society as a whole.
Example: Bloke wants money, bloke invents ace thing. He sells them, he gets money, other people get ace things.
Multiply that by millions of people and you have modern capitalism. Rather fitting, then, that his face is on money.
He also pioneered the theory of 'division of labour', which is that things can be done/made more effeciently by, say, 10 people all doing different jobs, rather than just 10 people all doing the same thing at the same time. This idea led to factories and the Industrial Revolution.

The bloke on the old (pre 1999?) £20 was Michael Faraday. He is considered the 'Father of Electricity'. He discovered electromagnetism, inventing electric motors, dynamos and generators in the process. He also invented those old-fashioned analogue meters (like a VU meter, for example), which at the time was called a Galvanometer. The unit of electrical capacitance, the Farad, is named after him.

The Bloke on the back of the current/old £20 is Edward Elgar. He wrote the music for "Land of hope and glory". Rolling Eyes
