Grooverider and fabio on radio 1... Bad Ambassadors?

I have just recently found UKBassRadio and kicked myself for not thinking about searching for a d n b radio online sooner! Up until this time I had to listen to Radio1s grooverider and fabio show.
Now the music they play is excellent but I HATE their shows, why? because of the shit they talk all over the music, and most of it is shit shit as well (who the fuk wants to know what football team they support - and be told in almost every show at that?!).
I'm sorry if there are any groove or fabio fans out there but I think they are doing DnB an injustice as anyone tuning in with a slight interest is just going to be put off!
I remb when Roni Size and Krust were on Galaxy every thursday night, they talked for five to ten minutes at the start of the show and five minutes at the end (2 hour show, if I remb rightly), it was ALL about the music with them. They did more for DnB for newcomers than the other two out together and in the short time they served.
So my question is, do you think grooverider and fabio are good ambassadors to Drum and Bass with what they do on Radio 1? (not what they do elsewhere, as the majority of people won't see that).

I'd say that seeing as their show is on at....when is it? like 2am on saturday morning or something? that it probably doesn't really matter. So as ambassadors through radio I doubt they make much of an impact.
I can understand all the talking as its mainstream radio, and especially as its radio 1, cuz those guys never shut up. Now if Hype and Andy C (who are, in my opinion, the best two DJs by a very long way) were on, and they weren't chattin i'd probably tune in every time, and it would probably do more for dnb.
However, no matter how big ur speakers, or wherever you are dnb isn't gonna be the same unless ur in a club rammed full of people; so this is really the only situation which can truly do dnb justice.
So what a big dnb dj does in a more commercial club/festival setting, where people will hear dnb 'in all its glory' will be much more important than on the radio, and thats probably why F&G chat so much cuz the people listening aren't really gonna know or care what they're listening to, or (in ur case), they will know and try and go elsewhere. So welcome! Hope you enjoy. I have no mic, so ull get no talking on my shows! Also, have u tried 1extra?i dunno if its ne good, but they might chat less.

Hi Ragman
Yeah tried 1extra and there are a couple of 'better' shows there, however Radio 1 is probably the only source of DnB via radio to a lot of folk who don't have digital (in particular those not living in london/bristol/manchester).
Fabio and grooverider are meant to be up there, whether they like it or not they represent DnB and I think they should always keep that in mind when they are on-air. Sometimes I think (and am not sure but I may have even heard one of them mention it) that they talk so much over the tunes is to prevent people taping the show well maybe they need a wake up call, if people want to 'rip' the tracks they'll get them of the web (and if it's all about the 'money' then that's also a dislikeable 'trait'/reason) - it should be about the music, always. Look at Pete Tong and the other dance people with their shows, they don't talk over the music as much (even by accident lol).
I personally don't get to club much, so have to disagree with you that you have to be in a club to enjoy DnB some of my best listening times have been at home in my studio a little mashed up just loosing myself into some awesome DnB, infact I'd probably say I've enjoyed those moments most, much more personal, deeper, no distractions, just me and the track... and I'm lost somewhere in there...

yes mate! i stand corrected, dnb can be enjoyed anywhere. for me tho its gotta be in a club environment, but each to their own man.
you should send them a message, telling them to shut up. include what you said above and they might just do it.

I agree - dnb can be enjoyed anywhere. In the club, studio, living room if onbe has the kit to enjoy it.
As for F&G - legends no less and cracking in their element. Yeh what they do on radio is wicked and they bring their personalities into it which is kool....but put it this way for 2-3 years before they did the show it used to be '1 in the jungle' and Navigator controlled the mic in style and diff djs were on every week. It was awesome......i used to listen as often as i could.

Must definately agree there, 1 in the jungle was amazing, god knows why that stopped!?? Navigator is also an all time fave, prob my favourite MC and he suited radio much much more than fab and groove, he has charisma which really came thro, kept it real with good balance. jmo!
Ragman - I have a suspicion fb and groove are aware that some people have a problem with them talking crap all over the music, as Im sure I've seen it (even taken part in) some of the discussions on the beeb site... but I think think they are too self-important, and don't give a toss what is being said.
Yep - I used to love dropping dnb in the car, just always on the lookout tho, no where to park up and not get disturbed really. It was much more intimate in my studio at home, no worries about being disturbed, felt cocooned even... I would just spend hours and hours listening to drum and bass and nothing else!!
Must admit I stepped out for a few years so am kindof outta touch. I remb one tune, can't remember who did the mix, female vocal singing along the lines of "everybody looking for a meaning, everybody doing their own thing" > beeline. Anyone know what the name of the track is??

Reasons for chat on radio
1. info on tunes
2. broadcasting standard ruling
My opinion, radio 1 and 1x do their job, radio due to it being more commercial radio may entice new listeners to drum and bass, and 1x catering for more clued up and deeper into the music.
Re : One In The Jungle session, i think they stopped them due to it getting a bit ghetto for the bbc same as when Roni n crew used to do bristol radio, it ended up all full cycle, not really giving a spectrum of what was happening.
Due to the internet, people who want to check the latest dubs etc, can choose many other sources these days.
so i guess f n r are sort of ambassodor, but mainstream. What gets me with 1x and r1 is the presenters state, remember where u heard this artist 1st etc. When those of us in the scene on a different level would have heard about and been playing tune by said artist way b4.
But bbc could show some love to dnb, by adding some new shows, crissy criss ever 4 weeks or something @ about 3am is a token. But u measure up the amount of house orientated shows to dnb, and its poor!
Have you ever noticed for the website on radio 1 that dnb isnt really in any catagory? Not in dance, not in urban? and Dj Shows, is only listed as fabio.
does this make sense?
3am in the morning.....Im gona think wot the heck was i typing whne i see this next week
Internet Radio is the new pirate.......Underground is and will always be 1st port of call when seeking out something different.

I completely agree (especially about what football team thay support!)- I never listen to the F&G show on R1 for the reason that they talk too much - I used to listen to the One In The Jungle show when i was about 14 - thats probably what got me in to DNB in the first place
You do have to remember that the BBC and legal radio stations have to follow very strict rules/guidlines so that is probably some of the reason - Just stick to the pirates and internet there are plently out there - thats ya best bet!

That may be the case but to chat so much it spoils the show? And if it were, why don't all the other shows on R1 have so much chat?
You are right Gav, pirates and the web may indeed be the best place to listen to DnB - but I believe what fab and groove are doing on R1 is 'harming' DnB...
