Reasons for chat on radio

1. info on tunes
2. broadcasting standard ruling

R1 is 'harming' DnB...

disagree with that, there alot more things harming dnb than radio 1 F&G chatting about footy and their wives. yes fabio goes on abit, and rider goes on about shutting things down, but its all light hearted banter for an early morning just come back from a club type thing. The beauty of R1 and 1X now, is the listen back option, if u want to hear the tunes with out the speech, just skip through it Laughing

Illegal downloads of mp3 tunes being one of 'em, soulseek, kazza and the latest fad, bit torrents. Tunes being available for leeching by people who dont really need to be having the tunes, its all status. I have the latest dubs bullshit! And this is just a percentage of the problem.

Its 50/50 - Radio is the commercial side, yes there is a commercial side, love it or hate it. Thats not just drum and bass its the whole dance music industry, it helps in some ways, by bringing new listeners to the scene (as ive said previously).

Do you its because we are "into the scene" a bit more than most, we think R1 could be harming things? I see the good n bad points in it.

Good morning to you all Laughing

it depends what you mean by 'harming' ezazz. For instance if someone listens to their show and then ends up thinking dnb is shite then its their loss. Now perhaps in a purely commercial/promotional sense it is harmful, but then as you pointed out before its not about the money its about the music.

dnb isn't made for commercial radio, which is why there isn't much on it and it occurs late at night, so I think that any effects are negligible.

If the pirate and internet stations were of a low quality I would say that would have a more detrimental effect. While if people made shite tunes that would also be harmful (look what happened to garage, not that it was anything to shout about in the first place!).

I found out about dnb by accident at fabric, and have been converted ever since. Which I guess is why I think its best in a club, but Kool and Origin kept me entertained at other times and I never really thought of turning to radio 1, nowadays I mix instead of listening to the radio which is why I bought my decks in the 1st place.

erm... i dunno.... If they listen to it and don't like the music fair enough then yeah it's thier loss. But if they listen to it and all that crappy talk gets in the way of them even begiining to enjoy the music or to 'check it out' properly then its not their fault and our loss - cos they could've been a potential fan.

I don't believe MP3's are killing music, they harm record sales yeah, but in terms of spreading music they are absolutely ace. Why? because more people can get more choice meaning people can listen to what they really want to. Regardless of whats pushed on them by the majors or the promos. Basically the music stands up for itself and speaks for itself. (in which case DnB wins hands down Razz )

But then I guess we have to think about whether music becoming 'free' would harm the production to begin with ie would people stop producing if there was little or no money in it (which is another debate altogether lol)

Smile

ILLEGAL downlaod of Mp3s aren't doing any part of any scene any good.

dnb would still be great without any fans, surely.

dunno, music 4 everyone. thats whats great about music, so much diversity yet harmony. if i couldnt record sets off people or albums i wouldn't be able to listen to such diverse range of music. chuck d from public enemy once said that without bootlegs and people recording albums the artists wouldnt be as well known. they may not be as 'rich' but the exsposure has worked for many artists in the long run.

its a tricky one, but my guess is that the music today would be very different if it was 'exclusive'

as for fabio and grooverider, legends in there own right and way. theyve done alot for the dnb scene and i'm sure some poeple must like their show, cos they bin going 5/6 years on radio 1.

stations like ukbass provide the antidote to the more mainstream radio style of massmedia organisations.street level Wink
