I think the only way that I would consider IRC would be to use CGI:IRC rather than Java, and then people that want to use an IRC client can do so but at least everyone would be able to view the chat. The only trouble with CGI:IRC is that (as far as I know from looking into it a couple of years ago) it uses up a lot of processing power on the server, and my web host have already complained about our cpu usage so not really an option on this server.
