I love this station! Anyway, I am having a heck of a time creating drums that sound anything like the stuff I listen to here. I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I am using Fruity Loops the song is set at 180bpm. I am using drum samples not loops.

The problem seems to stem from the drums sounding very slow and discernable where as the drums here seem very fast, fluid, and filled with energy. I need help creating this energy!

Some questions:

How should the snare sound? Mine sounds loud and tinny.

What else is needed to make a nice energy filled drum beat? I use a ride, crashes, hi-hat, and shakers as well as a bass drum and a snare. The effects I use are distortion and compression.

How is the little "stumble" effect made? Three hi-hats with one out of tune?

If any one can point me to answer or to some rock soild tutorials, I would be greatful!

Sounds like you've stretched the sample without knowing you've done it. Just reset the pitch/time stretch. Or maybe you need to check your base key, ( C5, C3 ect ). Usually I think the default is C5 not sure though.
As for the tightness and energy, layer your breaks, compress and EQ. When layering, SLIGHTLY pitch up OR down on one or more of the layers, a sly tip lol, helps give your loop character in a word.

Hope this helps.

Yeah I've been trying to put together some decent drum loops from samples but it seems pretty hard. Is it best to start with a kick and snare then work the rest around them? or is there a better way?

If you want the drums to sound real, asin played like a drummer would, just imagine your drumming, if your sequencing; EG, you cant have a open high hat and a closed high hat, at the same time, unless you have two sets of high hats... Which most kits don't, unless there custom.
Whenever I want to write a nice solid loop, I usually start with the classic " Amen " , then chop it up, maybe into 1/2 beats, depends how detailed you want it and what slicer your using, would recommend, "GURU" if your into choppy beats.
Then use your MIDI sequencer, whatever you use, and write a loop. Once you've got it, drop in different break instead of Amen, ( fluid, lomen, flight, apache, whatever ), until you get the gist of the sound you want, then layer it, ( maybe with something else? but less velocity ). Keep doing that until your happy. Then master the lot, but do it seperately asin , Snare, Kick, HH, OHH, CLHH etc.
Thing is it don't need to be chopped from any other break, you could be completely original and start from scratch with the drums, if you play live drums then thats even better!

Hope it helps, not much but you should get the general idea.
People find their own techniques anyway, but should be a starting point for you to build on.

AAAh the joys of making dnb breaks Very Happy I try and make my own breaks from scratch which is a pain but then you get your own original sound.

To be honest i think it depends entirely on the breaks/ hits you start with. You could piss about for years using a few snares ect to sound like a dnb snare but if its the wrong snare to begin with your fooked.

Fruity loops some times stretches the sample depending on its length. If you opened the snare hit in say sound forge it would have some space after it or is a long hit. if you chop it down (take the space off the end or half the size of the hit) it will probably not be stretched in FL.

I usually start with a kick and snare to get the general feel for it then add percussion on top. I try not to use too many snares or kicks as it can sound a bit messy. The best advice I can give is build up a sound bank of as many hits as you can and then mess with them. then when youve done that cut out the kicks and snares you like and stick to them. You can add as much percussian as you like then, knowing that you have some good kicks and snares. its time consuming but when you have some good kicks and snares then youre laughing Smile

the other option is to layer some sampled loops and add a phat kick and snare. i try not to do this myself as you can sometimes end up with a break sounding like everyone elses but uits a good way to get going.

Adding percusssian can be a pain but i feel alot of it is about subtlety. layering a few shakers or cymbols in the background can carry a break nicely. Hope this helps in some way...

you can check out some of my breaks @ www.myspace.com/kalaish

shameless plug but fuck it Very Happy Very Happy Cool

I concur with the very handsome kalaish here, Twisted Evil get a good sample base of the best quality kicks and snares you can, (theres free samples everywhere, and you can buy great sample packs too). The snare drum is without doubt what i spend the most time on initially, but its well worth it.

If it sounding thin, i would boost the EQ around 500-800HZ,(do this in moderation tho) this gives it a bit of body and definition (e.g like a danny byrd snare), and you'll find natural snares are fairly abundant in this frequency anyway. I like to layer my snares, especially if they are lacking in a bit of crisp high end, you can bung a clap, or something on top, confucious say ; ''just be creative and remember, theres more than one way to kill a mongoose.'' Cool

, As for the kick, the hard bit it to make sure its not lost under the bass, and has definition in the mid range frequencies. From there on in, it's a compression obsession. Laughing Compress the hits, bounce em out compress em, and compress the whole beat when its done as well.aaarrrrrrrrrrr
thats what Skelm taught me anyway , layers of compression, whilst at the same time keeping the sound crisp and clean ( always refer back to original sounds it helps). i think that could be the 'punch' you are talking about. i'm still miles off from perfecting it yet.

I think percussion is funnest bit. And you can go crazy. Like someone mentioned pots and pans, sampling human beatboxing, etc. The world is your kebab! It is deffinitely about subtleness as well, i always start from the hi hats, sometimes creating that 'stumble' effect your talking about, and then work outwards. Sometimes adding layers you can hardly make out, but add to give the track energy, fluidy and trousers. Panning the percussion is fun too. Nu Tone is my hero of using perc in DnB, and that jazzy stuff is usually pretty easy to get ur hands on too.

That's all i can think of. Please someone correct me if i'm talking bollox, ChOoOoOo cHoOoOoO Razz
